The Merry, Merry Month of May!

Monday, April 27th, 2015

May 25 _Natl Wine DayMay has so many national “wine days”, we can eat, drink and be merry all month long!  Along with Chardonnay, a familiar favorite, it’s a great excuse for you to try a couple of the lesser-known varietals like Muscat Canelli and Sauvignon Blanc – all of which grow well here in the Temecula Valley.

First up on the calendar is #MoscatoDay, which falls on May 9th.  The day was introduced here in the US by Gallo Family Vineyards back in 2012 to celebrate the rising popularity and sky-rocketing sales of the varietal.  If you know nothing about Moscato (or Muscat/Muscat Canelli), it originated in the Piedmont region of Italy where it’s a favorite due to its sweetness, lightness and affordability – and is popular as a sparkling wine. You’ll find Moscato table wines in white, red or rosé styles, and they make an especially delicious dessert wine.  With it’s bouquet of peach, honey and citrus, a delicate sweetness and fresh acidity, it’s perfect served with a plate of fresh cheeses.

Try the Muscat Canelli from Leoness Cellars or Lorimar Winery; or the Moscato from Ponte Family Estate Winery.

May 15th is #InternationalSauvignonBlancDay.  Originating in the Bordeaux region of France, the grape is also widely planted throughout New Zealand – and grows with ease here in the Temecula Valley.  An acidic wine that displays a citrus-y, grapefruit-like quality, it’s a pleasing choice for a warm summer day. A very versatile vino, Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with shell fish, grilled vegetables (even asparagus!) and cheeses.  It’s the perfect picnic wine!

A few faves include those from:  Europa Village , Maurice Car’rie Winery or Monte de Oro Winery.

And then there’s the day to pay homage to the old standby, Chardonnay, on #ChardonnayDay, May 21st.  The world’s most planted white wine grape varietal is enjoyed by fans all over the world.  Generally dry to medium-dry with pear, apple, tropical or citrus fruit flavors, Chardonnay is grown in virtually every wine-producing region.  Crisp and fresh with little to no oak aging, or creamy and buttery with extensive oak aging, there’s a Chardonnay out there that will make just about anyone smile!

Can’t live without Chardonnay’s are available at: Callaway Vineyard & Winery, Oak Mountain Winery and Thornton Winery.

Finishing out the month is #NationalWineDay, which is celebrated on May 25.  Not to be confused with National Drink Wine Day which is held in February, National Wine Day is actually just another lame excuse for us wine lovers to drink wine.  Because for wine lovers, everyday is wine day, right?  Cheers!

Temecula Winery Spotlight: Get to Know… Callaway Vineyard & Winery

Thursday, October 17th, 2013

The Story

Founded by entrepreneur and savvy businessman Ely Reeves Callaway Jr., Callaway Vineyard & Winery has been a Temecula Valley wine country institution for 40 years.  After extensive research in the late 1960s, Ely decided to plant his roots in Southern California’s South Coast AVA to take advantage of the “Rainbow Gap,” the gap between the mountains that allows Pacific Ocean air into Temecula Valley, creating a vine-friendly climate consisting of cool nights and warm days.

The Callaway vineyards were planted in 1969 and by the early 1970s, they were one of a handful of Temecula wineries producing and selling wine. Many say that Ely Callaway helped put Temecula on the map as a serious wine producing region. Now privately owned, the winery property was purchased by the Lin family of San Diego in late 2005. Callaway Vineyard & Winery wines are only available at the winery and are not available in any retail stores.

The Wines

Still one of the region’s largest wineries, Callaway proudly makes wine only from Temecula Valley fruit. The winery currently grows seven different grapes across 220 acres. The estate vineyards are planted with Syrah, Zinfandel, Viognier, Sangiovese, Dolcetto and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes; additional acreage is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay grapes.

Callaway’s Special Selection wines are high quality, limited productions that best exemplify the Callaway legacy. These wines are meant to be accessible, food-friendly and fun!

The brand’s “Winemaker’s Reserve” wines are aged longer to develop more complexity in the bottle. Chosen barrel by barrel for richness and depth, these wines are typically bigger and bolder to satisfy the seasoned wine lover.

Five Fun Facts About… Moscato

Friday, April 26th, 2013

Moscato, Muscatel, Muscat… what’s the difference between them? Just the names, actually.  Rather than just being one grape, Muscat includes a family of grapes in a range of colors (from white to brown, or to near black.)  For instance, Moscato is the Italian name and Muscatel the Spanish.

Here in the U.S., Moscato is making its mark and has become the hot wine of the moment. Some would say sweet versions of Moscato are ideal for the American sweet tooth; it’s also an easy wine for the new wine drinker to love.

For a perfect spring day, pack a picnic with a chilled bottle of Temecula Valley Moscato and pair it with good cheese, buttery crackers and seasonal fruit. Salud!

pipesmagazine.com

Here are Five Fun Facts About Moscato

1.  Muscat is the only fine wine grape that doubles as a table grape.

2.  Twitter currently buzzes with an average of 250 tweets an hour about people drinking their Moscato.

3.  In addition to Moscato, Muscatel and Muscat, this common white variety is also known as Muscadel, Muscat Blanc and Muscat Canelli.

4.  Virtually all pink Moscatos gain their hue from a splash of red wine, not skin contact.

5.  The breadth and number of varieties of Muscat suggest that it is perhaps the oldest domesticated grape variety, and there are theories that most families within the Vitis vinifera grape variety are descended from the Muscat variety.

Wine Country Recipe: Provencal Roasted Chicken

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Provencal Roasted Chicken Recipe

Courtesy of Callaway Vineyard & Winery

Roasted chicken is the perfect comfort food. It’s easy to cook and yields delicious results. If you have an extra ten minutes, go ahead and marinate the chicken before roasting. Use an organic chicken if possible. Not only are they raised humanely, but they taste better too. Roasted chicken will eat well with just about anything. From a green salad and baguette to grilled vegetables or a creamy risotto, there’s no shortage of creative combinations to complete your main course.

Serves 5-6

Ingredients:

1 Whole Chicken 3-4 lbs
2 tbsp olive oil
4 oz soft butter
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
Fresh herbs: lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage, bay leaf, marjoram
4 cloves garlic, lightly smashed
1 lemon, halved

Directions:

1) Preheat oven to 375 F. Rinse chicken under cold running water. Pat dry and place in a roasting pan, breast side up.

2) Pierce the inside of each thigh with the tip of a knife, then stud a clove of garlic into the hole.

3) Season the cavity of the chicken liberally with salt and pepper. Place the cut lemon, remaining garlic and ¾ of the herbs (stems can be intact) inside the chicken cavity.

4) Chop the remaining herbs; incorporate the herbs w/ the butter, olive oil, salt and pepper, then rub over outside of the chicken and under the skin.

5) Tie the legs together to ensure that the bird cooks evenly.

6) Roast until the chicken is cooked to 165 degrees when meat thermometer is inserted into the thickest part of the thigh, approximately 1 hour; cooking time will vary depending on your oven and size of the chicken.

7) Baste bird with the pan drippings every 15 minutes or so.

8) After the chicken is fully cooked, place on a platter to let rest for about 7-8 minutes.

9) For a quick sauce, deglaze the roasting pan with a generous splash of Callaway white wine and 2 cups of chicken broth or water. Scrape the bottom of the roasting pan with a spatula to loosen the browned bits, then cook over medium-low heat until reduced by half. Slice or segment chicken and spoon sauce over to serve.

Winemaker’s Rountable: Five Facts About… Pinot Grigio

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

Sometimes spritzy, always easy, Pinot Grigio is certainly a favorite white wine for spring. With its warm days and cool nights, Temecula is an ideal spot to grow Pinot Grigio, which requires plenty of sunshine to develop the vibrant apple and melon flavors for which it is known. And everyone enjoys drinking it, especially when paired with a chunk of aged Gouda cheese, Marcona almonds and dried apricots, a grilled salmon salad with a healthy squeeze of lemon, or a nice bowl of penne tossed with spring vegetables and butter.

Below are five fun facts on this Old World varietal, plus some suggestions on where to pick up an affordable bottle at one of your local Temecucla Valley wineries.

  1. Pinot Gris (French) and Pinot Grigio (Italian) refer same grape – just different countries and different styles.
  2. Very closely related to the Pinot Noir grape, the grape normally has a grayish-blue skin, accounting for its name – gris meaning “grey” in French; pinot comes from the French word “pine cone,” which could have been given to it because the grapes grow in pine cone-shaped clusters.
  3. The first American Pinot Gris vines were planted in Oregon in 1966 by David Lett from Eyrie Vineyards.
  4. Pinot Gris grows well in the Central and South coastal areas of California. The Pinot Gris from California is often called Pinot Grigio because of its similarity in style to the wine of Italy.
  5. Pinot gris is considered an “early to market wine” – which means it can be bottled and out on the market within 4–12 weeks after fermentation.  This white can be opened and consumed young.

Winemaker’s Roundtable: Five Facts About Bordeaux Blends

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

For this edition of Winemaker’s Roundtable, we’re talking about Bordeaux Blends- specifically, red Bordeaux blends. These lush, deeply rich wines are called Meritage here in California, and Temecula Valley wineries offer a fine variety of what would be a great pairing to a holiday meal.

  1. Bordeaux is a port city on the Garonne River in Southwest France, and is the world’s premier wine industry capital. Bordeaux’s defining characteristics are its limestone soils and the neighboring rivers, which are used to irrigate the land.
  2. A red Bordeaux wine is a blend of two or more of these five grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.
  3. In 1988, a small group of Napa Valley vintners formed The Meritage Association, using the term “meritage” (a combination of merit and heritage, and pronounced like the latter) to denote red and white Bordeaux-style wines made outside of Bordeaux. The term “Meritage” was created to avoid using the name “Bordeaux” for wines that are not actually produced in the Bordeaux region.
  4. Because the percentage of each grape used in Bordeaux blends varies, each year’s vintage brings different flavors and nuances, making tasting Bordeaux blends a fun and interesting experience. Red Bordeaux blends typically are rich, full-bodied wines with notes of black currant, blackberries, cocoa and cherries.
  5. Bordeaux-style wines go well with grilled steak, rack of lamb, or even game meats like venison or duck. Several Temecula Valley wineries offer wonderful Meritage wines perfect for the holidays or simply your next meal:
