June 23, 2010 - - Temecula, CA.   The Temecula Valley Wine Society (TVWS) announced the date of its Sixth Annual Wine Competition.  The Temecula Valley, Southern California Wine Competition judging will take place at Maurice Car’rie Winery on July 27 and 28, 2010.  All wineries in the South Coast Appellation including the Counties of Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and San Diego are eligible to submit wine for competition although 75% of the grapes in wines entered must be from the South Coast appellation.  The cost per entry is $30 (four bottles per entry required). 

 

Bob Foster, well known wine judge, wine writer and retired San Diego attorney leads the distinguished panel of judges which includes: William S. Bloxsom-Carter, Executive Chef and Director of Food and Beverage at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles; Larry Van Aalst, longtime wine judge and Sommelier at the famous Equus Restaurant in Santa Rosa; and Jeff Slankard, wine director for Barons Marketplace, a chain of specialty food and wine stores located in San Diego and Riverside counties.

 

Medals are awarded in multiple categories; award winners are determined in a blind tasting by the panel of judges.  Competition winners will be announced at the gala dinner on Wednesday, July 28, 2010.  The dinner, which is open to the public at a cost of $55 per person, serves winning wines from the competition. For dinner tickets and information, please contact Vicki Nelson at 951.926.1160 or via email at dalenvicki@msn.com.

 

Profits from the awards dinner are used to fund scholarships given by the Temecula Valley Wine Society to university and graduate students studying viticulture, enology, wine marketing and related sciences.  In 2009, the Temecula Valley Wine Society donated $16,000 in scholarships.
