Five Fun Facts About… Moscato

Friday, April 26th, 2013

Moscato, Muscatel, Muscat… what’s the difference between them? Just the names, actually.  Rather than just being one grape, Muscat includes a family of grapes in a range of colors (from white to brown, or to near black.)  For instance, Moscato is the Italian name and Muscatel the Spanish.

Here in the U.S., Moscato is making its mark and has become the hot wine of the moment. Some would say sweet versions of Moscato are ideal for the American sweet tooth; it’s also an easy wine for the new wine drinker to love.

For a perfect spring day, pack a picnic with a chilled bottle of Temecula Valley Moscato and pair it with good cheese, buttery crackers and seasonal fruit. Salud!

pipesmagazine.com

Here are Five Fun Facts About Moscato

1.  Muscat is the only fine wine grape that doubles as a table grape.

2.  Twitter currently buzzes with an average of 250 tweets an hour about people drinking their Moscato.

3.  In addition to Moscato, Muscatel and Muscat, this common white variety is also known as Muscadel, Muscat Blanc and Muscat Canelli.

4.  Virtually all pink Moscatos gain their hue from a splash of red wine, not skin contact.

5.  The breadth and number of varieties of Muscat suggest that it is perhaps the oldest domesticated grape variety, and there are theories that most families within the Vitis vinifera grape variety are descended from the Muscat variety.

He has over 25 years of history in making award-winning wines, including a 16-year stretch at Mount Palomar Winery in Temecula; in addition, he’s worked with La Vina Winery in New Mexico and honed his expertise alongside famous Napa Valley winemaker, Jed Steel from Kendall Jackson Winery. Southern California wine enthusiasts are encouraged to stop by and meet Etienne—he always loves to chat about Wilson Creek wines.

Wilson Creek’s Almond Champagne is perhaps the best known of the wines offered by this Temecula winery, but they also boast dozens of unique and popular wines for taste and purchase, from sauvignon blanc and viognier to zinfandel and port. Shop all Wilson Creek wines here.

Wine Country Recipe: Salt and Pepper Skirt Steak, Courtesy of Doffo Winery

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Salt and Pepper Grilled Skirt Steak

Recipe courtesy of Doffo Winery in Temecula Valley, CA

Skirt steak is a flavorful cut of beef so you don’t need to do much before throwing it on a hot grill. Just a simple marinade followed by a healthy salt and pepper seasoning will do the trick. Serve with roasted spring veggies or salad greens and a generous side of garlicky chimichurri sauce. Purchase Doffo’s famous chimichurri sauce here!

Makes 6 Servings

Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients:

For the marinade:

2 tbsp soy sauce
2 cloves mashed garlic
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tbsp vegetable or olive oil
2 lbs beef skirt steak
1 1/2 tbsp freshly ground black pepper
kosher salt to taste

Preparation:

In a large mixing bowl, combine all the marinade ingredients and whisk together thoroughly. Add the skirt steak, and toss in the marinade until all the pieces are coated evenly. Cover the bowl and let sit, at room temperature for 20 minutes.

Remove skirt steak from marinade and pat dry with paper towels. Season with freshly ground black pepper and kosher salt. Cook about 3 minutes per side for medium-rare on a very hot, preheated outdoor grill, or on a grill pan indoors. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Be sure to slice against the grain for the best results.

Pair this dish with Doffo Private Reserve 2010 Malbec.

Tickets Still Available for Grape Day 2013

Temecula Valley Wine Country to Host 30th Annual Grape Day Conference

Purchase tickets here!

One-day conference unites winegrowers, vintners and educators from Temecula Valley and beyond to share insights on best practices for growing, making and selling fine wine

The Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association (TVWA) will host its annual Grape Day conference on Thursday, April 18 at South Coast Winery Resort & Spa, inviting aspiring and current winegrowers, vintners and the wine-curious to a full day of education and insights about the world of winemaking. Open to the public, Grape Day routinely draws attendees from throughout Southern California and beyond, bringing wine professionals and newcomers together in a shared effort to continually improve the growing, production and marketing of fine wine.

Highlights from the 2013 Grape Day conference agenda include the following presentations:

Wine Sensory and Olfactory Education, with Alexandre Schmitt, Wine & Flavors SARL.

Schmitt studied his craft at the Institut Supérieur International du Parfum in Versailles. Guided by iconic winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet, technical director of Château Pétrus, he created the global consulting practice, Wines & Flavors.

Managing Vine Balance, with S. Kaan Kurtural, PhD; Department of Viticulture and Enology, California State University, Fresno. Dr. Kurtural joined the faculty at Department of Viticulture and Enology in 2008. Previously, he was appointed as the Senior Viticulture Extension Specialist at the Department of Horticulture at the University of Lexington Kentucky.

Regional Marketing, with Camron King; Executive Director, Lodi Winegrape Growers Association. King was vice president of state government relations at the California Association of Winegrape Growers for eight years prior to being named Executive Director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission in 2012.

The largest and most commercially successful region in the South Coast AVA, the viticultural zone spanning more than 2 million acres from Riverside County to the San Diego border, the Temecula Valley has long served as a steward of the Southern California wine community. Founded in 1983 as a way to help Temecula Valley’s nascent winegrowing community improve its knowledge of viticulture, Grape Day has since evolved into the region’s premier wine industry conference, introducing the latest research, methods and technology, and encouraging a collaborative spirit and dialogue within its membership and the broader California wine industry.

“Since 1983, Grape Day has contributed to the continued success of the Temecula AVA. Every spring, we look forward to sharing best practices, knowledge and experience with the unified grape-growing community here in Southern California,” says TVWA Viticulture Chair Ben Drake of Drake Enterprises, Inc. Ben was recently recognized by the California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) as the 2013 CAWG Leader of the Year.

Grape Day tickets are $65 for TVWA members, $85 for non-members and can be purchased online at TemeculaWines.org (click on Events) or by phone at (800) 801-9463. Conference includes continental breakfast, buffet lunch and wine and cheese evening reception.

About the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association

Comprising 35 wineries and more than 60 winegrowers, the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association is a nonprofit regional organization dedicated to increasing awareness of the quality wines and wine grapes grown in the Temecula Valley and South Coast Appellations. Established in 1984, the Temecula AVA consists of 33,000 acres, of which approximately 1,300 acres are currently planted to commercial vineyards. Known as Southern California’s wine country, the Temecula Valley is located in Riverside County just one hour from San Diego, Orange County and Palm Springs.
