Wine Country Recipes: Perfect Wine & Food Pairings for California Wine Month

Monday, September 24th, 2012

In honor of California Wine Month, we’ve rounded up this year’s best recipes and pairings from Temecula Valley Wine Country!

What is a Perfect Pairing?

Truth be told, there is no such thing as a “perfect” pairing! The old adage, “white wine with fish and red wine with meat” isn’t always a tried-and-true method of pairing wine. We say have fun with it and play with pairings to discover how different wines can bring out the subtle nuances of flavors in a food.

For those who aren’t as adventurous, we’ve paired up Temecula wines with some of our favorite wine country recipes provided by our member wineries.

We hope you enjoy creating these “perfectly” paired recipes in your own home, while popping the cork on one of our beautiful Temecula Valley wines.

Here are a few of our favorite gourmet recipes from Temecula Valley wineries perfectly paired with Temecula Valley wine —

Winery Spotlight: Get To Know…Wiens Family Cellars

Friday, September 21st, 2012

The Story

After decades in the beverage and hospitality industries, the Wiens family opened their doors to their first winery in the farm country of nearby Sacramento in 2001, then moved on to open their popular Temecula Valley winery in 2006.

“We have a large and tightly-knit family with a broad range of talents, all contributing to the success of our business,” says Doug Wiens.  “We enjoy the company of friends, good food, and fine wines. Our winery was built to be oriented around a relaxed, friendly, and rural lifestyle.

Our goal is to create a place where people feel right at home – part of our family.”

The Wines

Doug says the family mission is “to make the highest quality wine and provide it at a reasonable price. The winery seal contains the words Quality, Family, and Integrity.  We stand firmly by those three words as our guiding principles.”

Wiens’ slogan is “Famous for Big Reds!”  Indeed, Wiens offers an array of favorites from Zinfandel to Cab to Syrah, plus plenty of delicious blends with memorable names like Perspective, Crowded, and Obscura. Wiens is also one of the only area wineries to offer a Pinot Noir.

Not to be missed, Wiens Family Cellars pours a variety of whites and dessert wines, too.  At the tasting bar, guests will enjoy both white blends and single varietals like Chardonnay and Viognier (the floral grape is a hit in Temecula Valley!)  If you’re celebrating in wine country, be sure to buy a bottle of Amour de L’Orange – their festive sparkler has a citrus twist.

5 Fun Facts About…Grenache

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

Grenache (pronounced gren-aash) is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world!  Primarily featured in Rhone-style blends, it’s a star in the famous trio of GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre.)  The reason why Grenache is so valued in wine blends is because it brings body and fruitiness without the added tannins.

Grenache grapes

The characteristic notes of Grenache are berry fruit such as raspberries and strawberries.  Grenache-based wines can develop complex and intense notes flavors including  black currants, black cherries, black olives, coffee, gingerbread, honey, leather, black pepper, tar, spices, and roasted nuts.

Here are five fabulous facts about this blending master!

Facts courtesy of Wikipedia.
    1. France and Spain are Grenache’s largest principal wine regions, followed by Australia and the United States.
    2. Rosé grenaches are often characterized by their strawberry and cream notes, like this South Coast Winery award-winner; $14.
    3. Grenache vines bud early and require a long growing season in order to fully ripen. This grape is often one of the last to be harvested, often ripening weeks after Cabernet Sauvignon.  It thrives in warm, dry conditions – like Temecula Valley!
    4. The long ripening process = high levels of sugar, which means Grenache-based wines are capable of substantial alcohol levels, often at least 15%.
    5. Grenache blanc is the light-skinned cousin to Grenache – and a very important white grape variety in France, planted fourth after Chardonnay, Semillion, and Ugni blanc.

Interested in tasting Grenache in action?  Check these Temecula Valley wineries off your list for fall – and order your holiday wines early.  Grenache is a classic light red that pairs perfectly with your Thanksgiving turkey.

In the chorus of Rhone varieties, Grenache rarely gets to perform solo… The grape often appeals to winegrowers because of it’s workhorse-like productivity in early years of the life of the vine.  But it may appeal to consumers, particularly as the vine ages, because of wines light in tannin that can have a faint sweetness and high degree of alcohol. Even though the day of our tasting was still warm, it strikes me now as an excellent transitional red as the weather has cooled.” – Dr. Vino.com
