Winery Spotlight: Get to Know… Chapin Family Vineyards

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Meet one of our newest Temecula Valley wineries!

The Story

The Chapin family has owned property in Southern California’s wine country since 1987 and began planting their first vineyards with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petite Verdot back in 2002.  By 2006, the first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon wine was released to local restaurants and the Chapin wine club.  Since then, additional vineyards have been planted with lesser-known Italian red grape varietals like Montepulciano and Aglianico – and Viognier, a popular French white that’s a Temecula Valley favorite.

The Chapin tasting room room opened in 2011 and offers beautiful vineyard views, fun events, and wine club membership.

The Wines

The Chapin Family believes in producing small lots of handcrafted wines, offering intense flavor with depth and balance that best represent the Temecula Valley Appellation.  They say that 80% of wine quality starts in the vineyard – to achieve that desired level of quality in all their wines, the Chapin team has implemented intense European methods of farming that encourage ripe and full-bodied wine grapes.

Wine Tasting Info

Chapin flights offer classic favorites like Merlot and Cabernet, along with Zinfandel and Montepulciano for variety.

$15 gets you a generous 7-taste flight.  Boar’s Head cheese & deli trays are available for snacking.

Open daily from 10am to 5pm; Address: 36084 Summitville St. Temecula Valley; Phone: 951-506-2935

For more information, visit their website at ChapinFamilyVineyards.com.

Serves 4 as a main course, serves 8 as an appetizer

No matter where you are in the world, this garlic-infused California-style clambake recipe will bring the spirit of The Golden State to you.  Celebrate California Wine Month this September with this light and classic seafood dish, which can be served as an appetizer or a main dish.

Pair with California Sauvignon Blanc or Rosé.  *See below for Temecula wine suggestions!

3 tablespoons (45ml) olive oil
4 shallots, roughly chopped
4 cloves garlic, peeled and roughly chopped
1 cup (240ml) California Sauvignon Blanc or other crisp white wine
1 cup (240ml) chicken stock
2 pounds (900g) mussels
2 pounds (900g) clams
1 tablespoons (15ml) parsley, finely chopped

– In a large stockpot, over medium-high heat, add the olive oil, shallots and garlic.

– Sauté for 1 minute or until the vegetables are slightly browned.

– Add the wine and chicken stock.

– Bring the liquid to a boil and cook for 3 minutes.

– Add the mussels and clams and steam for 7 minutes. Halfway through the cooking time, shake the pot several times.

-Remove from heat and pour mussel and clams into a large serving dish.

– Garnish with parsley.

– Serve immediately, accompanied by a fresh, rustic-style bread.

5 Facts About… Chardonnay

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

This month it’s all about Chardonnay! Most would agree that Chardonnay is the world’s favorite wine – due both to its deliciousness and its versatility. Chardonnay can pair with a wide array of foods depending on the style (oaked/unoaked) and the region (old world/new world), and is equally enjoyable on its own. Great pairings to try include oysters with unoaked styles and oaked or earthy styles with trout, turkey or creamy seafood dishes like lobster mac and cheese.

The grape became a global phenomenon in the 1980′s.  Because of its exploding popularity, many vineyards started planting Chardonnay vines for a guaranteed profit, especially in California.  Thus solidifying it’s permanent place in wine history.

Check out these Five Fact About Chardonnay to learn more about how it became one of the most popular wines of all time!

  1. The Chardonnay grape itself is very neutral.  Many of the flavors commonly associated with the wine are actually derived from its terrior and oak influence.

  1. Chardonnay is an important component of many sparkling wines around the world, including Champagne.

  1. Chardonnay fruit is easy to cultivate, adaptable to different conditions, and ripens early.

  1. Main regions that grow this widespread grape: France, Italy, California, New York, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa.

  1. Contrary to the cheap, boxed versions we’ve seen, Chablis is actually a renowned sub-region in Burgundy, France that produces crisp, unoaked wines made from… you guessed it! Chardonnay.

Almost every Temecula Winery offers a great Chardonnay, of course!  Here’s what we’re drinking for summer:
