Win $4000 in Cash + Prizes – Enter Temecula Valley’s Video Contest!

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Are you a SoCal wine-lover who loves making videos for fun?  Why not turn that fun into profit?  For the first time ever, Temecula Valley is launching a summer-long Video Contest!  Amateur and pro filmmakers alike are invited to submit a short video demonstrating that “Temecula Valley is Southern California’s wine country.”  The grand prize is worth $4,000 and includes a wine country weekend for two, plus $2500 in cash!

Contest entry period is Friday, June 1 to Friday, August 31, 2012.

So grab your iPhone, FlipCam or old fashioned video camera and head to Temecula for a weekend of wine tasting and shooting; or if you can’t visit this summer, we’ve created an album of photos that you can use to create your video on iMovie, Adobe or an easy online editor like VideoToolBox.com!

The videos themes are as follows —

  • Temecula Valley wine country is the only major wine region in Southern California
  • Temecula Valley is an easy 60-90 minute drive from SoCal’s major metropolitan areas (Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs, Orange County and the Inland Empire)
  • Temecula Valley is a fun, must-see destination with 35 wineries, 12 winery restaurants, great hotels and lodging, and stunning vineyards surrounded by mountains
  • Temecula Valley is home to a wide variety of award-winning wines for any palate

Participants can find complete contest rules and instructions at www.TemeculaWines.org/VideoContest beginning June 1, 2012. Video submissions must be original work and can use still images from TVWA’s online image archive, found at http://flic.kr/s/aHsjzzuCUC.

Voting takes place September 1-30, 2012. Online voting will determine the top five finalists; participants can share their entries via Facebook and Twitter to encourage friends and family to vote for them a maximum of once per day throughout the voting period. The grand prize winner and runner-up will be determined by a panel of TVWA marketing experts. Winners will be announced October 1, 2012. Prizes are as follows:

  • Runner-up – Two tickets to the 2012 Harvest Celebration Weekend, plus dinner for two at Meritage Restaurant at Callaway Winery.
  • Honorable Mention – Three honorable mention winners will receive a pair of tickets to the 2012 Harvest Celebration Weekend.
Transportation is not included except as indicated; non-cash prizes are not redeemable for cash.

Wine Country Recipe: Chicken and Sausage Cacciatore from Leoness Cellars

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Grilled Chicken and Sausage Cacciatore with Leoness Cellars 2008 Signature Selection Syrah

The perfect pasta dish for spring!  If you’ve never made cacciatore before, get ready for a flavorful meal with chicken, sausage, veggies, olives, and garlic.  Pair it with a quality Temecula Valley syrah and you’ve got a new dinner favorite.  This recipe appears courtesy of Leoness Cellars.

Recipe serves 6

Chili and Garlic Oil

1 cup olive oil or canola oil

1 head of garlic, cloves separated and peeled

2 tsp. dried crushed red pepper flakes

Combine the oil, pepper flakes, and garlic cloves in a heavy small sauce pan. Cook over low heat about 5 minutes.

Remove from heat. Cool to room temperature. Remove and reserve garlic cloves.

Grilled Chicken and Sausage Cacciatore

4-6 chicken thighs and/or breasts with skin and bones

1 package spicy or sweet Italian sausage, casing removed

2 red onions, quartered

3 bell peppers (combination of red, yellow, and green) cut into 3 inch strips

2 medium zucchini, cut 1 ½ inch diagonally

2 yellow crooked squash, cut 1 ½ inch diagonally

1 package of mushrooms, cut in half

1 32 oz. can diced tomatoes

1 cup green olives

2 cups of Syrah wine

1 tbs. Italian seasoning, plus more for seasoning chicken and vegetables

1 tbs. Herb de Provence

Salt and pepper to taste

Spaghetti noodles, cooked according to package directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees

Heat  4-5 tbs. chili garlic oil in large fry pan.  Season both sides of chicken with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Cook chicken on both sides until golden brown. Set aside in large baking dish. Keep covered. Reserve fry pan with chicken drippings.

Deglaze the fry pan with chicken drippings with the Syrah. Add can of diced tomatoes, green olives, reserved garlic cloves, Italian seasoning, and Herb de Provence. Add salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil and keep at a simmer.

Season vegetables with salt, pepper and Italian seasoning.  Baste vegetables with chili garlic oil. Grill vegetables in batches on stove top grill pan or BBQ until crisp tender. Add vegetables to chicken in large baking dish. Keep covered.

Grill sausage. Cut sausage into thirds diagonally. Add to chicken and vegetables. Pour Cabernet Sauce over the chicken, sausage and vegetables. Cook covered in oven until chicken is cooked through and tender. About 30-40 minutes.

Season spaghetti with 2 tbs chile garlic oil.

Serve Cacciatore on top of spaghetti. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and dried crushed red pepper flakes if desired.

Pair with Leoness Cellars 2008 Signature Selection Syrah and enjoy!

Get to Know… Robert Renzoni Vineyards

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Tuscan Villa Rendering - Summer 2013

Robert Renzoni Vineyards has got big news to share!  Their 19th century-style Tuscan Villa estate is slated to break ground on July 1st, 2012.

The Tuscan Villa will offer visitors an authentic Italian experience in wine country. Opening Summer 2013, the property will include a 4500 square-foot outdoor patio with a gourmet pizza kitchen featuring a wood-burning brick oven, 3500 square-room tasting room, an exclusive wine club tasting bar and al fresco area, and an extensive basement for barrel storage. In the center of the property, a 50-foot bell tower will chime at the opening and closing of every day in honor of Robert’s grandfather, Domenic Renzoni.

“We’re thrilled to announce Louis Prima Jr. and his band will be staying and playing during the opening weekend festivities,” says owner Robert Renzoni.

Look to visit the new tasting facility next summer and be sure to check the website and Twitter for the latest updates throughout the year!

In the meantime, The Little Winehouse is a hidden gem in the vineyards. Wine-lovers are welcome to picnic on the grounds among the horse trails and hitching posts. “It’s the perfect spot to bring your own picnic lunch and enjoy a bottle of wine with family,” Robert encourages.

Also new! Robert Renzoni Vineyards offers a guided Vineyard Walking Tour which starts right in the vines. Wine enthusiasts will learn about the agriculture that goes into producing great grapes that make fabulous wines. Vineyard and winery tours are a great introduction to winemaking and the region of Temecula Valley.

The Story

The history of winemaking in the Renzoni family dates to 1886, when Robert’s great-grandfather Federico began working in the vineyards near Fano, a small Italian village on the shores of the Adriatic Sea in Tuscany. While tending the vineyards, Federico and his father began making wine for family and friends – these were the humble beginnings of the long Renzoni family wine history. The Robert Renzoni Winery and Vineyard is a tribute to Robert’s ancestor’s, Federico, Romeo, and Domenic.

Winemaker’s Rountable: Five Facts About… Pinot Grigio

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

Sometimes spritzy, always easy, Pinot Grigio is certainly a favorite white wine for spring. With its warm days and cool nights, Temecula is an ideal spot to grow Pinot Grigio, which requires plenty of sunshine to develop the vibrant apple and melon flavors for which it is known. And everyone enjoys drinking it, especially when paired with a chunk of aged Gouda cheese, Marcona almonds and dried apricots, a grilled salmon salad with a healthy squeeze of lemon, or a nice bowl of penne tossed with spring vegetables and butter.

Below are five fun facts on this Old World varietal, plus some suggestions on where to pick up an affordable bottle at one of your local Temecucla Valley wineries.

  1. Pinot Gris (French) and Pinot Grigio (Italian) refer same grape – just different countries and different styles.
  2. Very closely related to the Pinot Noir grape, the grape normally has a grayish-blue skin, accounting for its name – gris meaning “grey” in French; pinot comes from the French word “pine cone,” which could have been given to it because the grapes grow in pine cone-shaped clusters.
  3. The first American Pinot Gris vines were planted in Oregon in 1966 by David Lett from Eyrie Vineyards.
  4. Pinot Gris grows well in the Central and South coastal areas of California. The Pinot Gris from California is often called Pinot Grigio because of its similarity in style to the wine of Italy.
  5. Pinot gris is considered an “early to market wine” – which means it can be bottled and out on the market within 4–12 weeks after fermentation.  This white can be opened and consumed young.
